Marketing ROI Explained: A Small Business Owner's Guide to Tracking Every Dollar

The "Half My Marketing Wastes Money" Problem

John Wanamaker famously said, "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half." For a small business operating on thin margins, you can't afford to waste half your budget.

Moving Beyond Vanity Metrics

Agencies love to report on things that look big. "We got you 100,000 impressions!" "Your post got 500 likes!"

But you can't pay your rent with likes. You need to track metrics that matter to your bottom line. If you don't know your numbers, you are flying blind.

The 3 Metrics You Actually Need

1. CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)

Formula: Total Marketing Spend / New Customers Acquired.

If you spent $1,000 on Ads and got 10 customers, your CAC is $100. Is that good? It depends on the next number.

2. LTV (Lifetime Value)

Formula: Average Order Value × Purchase Frequency × Customer Lifespan.

If that customer spends $50 every month for 2 years, their LTV is $1,200. Spending $100 to make $1,200 is a home run. But if they only spend $50 once, you just lost $50 acquiring them.

3. ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)

Formula: Revenue from Ads / Cost of Ads.

A ROAS of 4.0 means for every $1 you put in, you get $4 back. This is the "money printing machine" metric.

The Attribution Challenge

Customer journeys are messy. Someone might see your Facebook ad, click it, leave, search for you on Google 3 days later, and then buy.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is free and essential. It helps you track where your sales are really coming from. At Performatica, we set up transparent dashboards for our clients so they can log in and see exactly how much revenue their ads generated yesterday.

Conclusion

Marketing isn't an expense; it's an investment. But like any investment, you need to track the returns. If you can't measure it, don't spend it.
